CHAPTER SEVEN

The Sleepers

ZOE

STANDING before Eli, I heard the mechanical sound rumbling around us. The sound was coming from all around us. And I knew I wouldn’t last long.

Blake was already gone, to get help. She was smashing some sleepers along her way. But even with her strength, we weren’t going to get out of this mess, without some kind of loss.

I saw the red eyes of a sleeper staring at as. And, like all the other sleepers, I’ve seen. This one was about to attack.

None of them were able to reason with. And most of the time, their voices were incomprehensible.

I’m not sure why. But the crackling sound of their voices drove me crazy.

The first time I saw them, I thought that they were glitching. And the sound coming out of their mouth was a little understandable. But over the years, they got worse.

I quickly grabbed a hold of Eli’s shirt. My hand tried to move him away from me. But instead, I got in front of him. The sleeper came down at me. They landed a fatal blow to my head from their knife. And I knew that I was going to be out for twenty minutes.

Laying on the ground, I watched as the sleeper began to carve up my body. They moved quickly like they knew how to disarm me. But they didn’t know enough to kill me. Or else, they would’ve done so.

Taking a deep breath in, I blacked out.

A while had passed before I came too. And I knew a lot had happened.

I stood up to my feet with my hand touching my forehead. There was a strange taste in my mouth. I guessed that some dust got into my mouth. I glanced over my shoulder and saw the destroyed remains of the sleeper. The dust was settling down onto the sleepers' remains. And my eyes glanced over at Eli.

There was a look on Eli’s face. He was upset by what happened to me. But I had no idea why.

I heard the sound of the other sleepers coming towards us. Grabbing his hand, I ran. I heard Eli following behind me. I didn’t have to tug on his hand too hard, he just followed me, like a loyal dog.

Looking around the crater, I knew we needed to find someplace to hide. Even for a moment. We needed to get out of the crater and to someplace hidden. I knew something wasn’t right. And I hoped a wall would be good enough for us to catch our breath.

I felt Eli’s hand clenching on mine. And I knew that I was right.

Standing quietly, I heard the mechanical sound of the sleepers coming closer to us. They stopped on the edge of the crater. I wondered if they were trying to find a way through the crater. Even with all the dust. The debris was unstable. I kept my head towards the back of the wall. I wanted to make sure we stayed out of their sights.

Glancing over my shoulder, I saw Eli.
